Taylor Swift is back and it looks like she’s throwing shade at everyone. In the just released video for “Look What You Made Me Do” that made its premiere at this years VMAs, friends, exes, music executives, enemies, and even herself get their serving from Swift in the dark four-minute clip.
The first sign of shade comes in the from of a gravestone inscribed with “Nils Sjoberg,” moments after Zombie-Swift rose up in the ultimate Michael Jackson-esque moment from the very grave of her “Reputation”. Nils Sjoberg is the the previous pseudonym, the singer used when she secretly wrote her ex Calvin Harris’s hit song “This Is What You Came For.” The singer later outed herself when the pair broke up. Some might even say she chose to start the clip with the moment many believe public opinion decided to turn against her last year.
The video then moves on to take a jab at her next ex, as dancers wear the “I love TS’ shirts movie star Tom Hiddleston wore during their relationship.
Next, the singer takes a shot at Kim Kardashian’s robbery in Paris while sitting in a tub full of jewels. For those eagle-eyed viewers, some might even spot the lone $1 bill, what many are claiming to be a reference to her own symbolic court victory over sexual assault where she took just $1 in damages. But Swift doesn’t stop there. By the end of the music video she has fired shots at Katy Perry, Kanye West, streaming services, her squad and lastly herself
In what is probably the most discussed part of the video, several “old Taylors” take their bows and bicker amongst each other, all while bringing up the many criticisms people have made over the years. You wouldn’t be alone if the scene made you think of Kylie Minogue’s iconic music video for “Did It Again.”
While the “Swifts” throw criticisms at each other another Swift stands guard from the wing of a gold plane that has been spray-painted with the word, “Reputation.” Oh the metaphors!
It seems only suited that the video premiered at the 2017 VMAs reaches its climax with a Swift wearing the same gown she wore to the same awards ceremony where Kanye West famously crashed her acceptance speech for best female video. Reiterating a statement Swift made after her latest beef with West and Kardashian, 2009 Swift says, “I would very much like to be excluded from this narrative.”
In which the other Swifts reply, “Shut up!”
Gotta give it to Swift, she’s certainly not holding back. If “Look What You Made Me Do” is anything to go off, we’re in for a treat with the release of “Reputation.”
It’s time to sit back and enjoy the many metaphorical “up yours” Swift has for the haters in the coming months. Bring it girl!
