It’s pretty much a given since Disney bought Lucasfilm, that we’ll be getting a new Star Wars film every single year until the world ends. Which for this sci-fi geek, is great news!
Rian Johnson who helmed the upcoming The Last Jedi, has been given the green light to make an entirely new Star Wars trilogy that will depart from the Skywalker saga.
What this means is Johnson will write and direct all three films, featuring a whole new story with new characters.
“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” says Lucasfilm president, Kathleen Kennedy, “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”
Johnson and his longtime collaborator Ram Bergman issued a statement about the new trilogy:
“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi. Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”
There’s currently no set date as to when the new trilogy will go into production, but this does leave us wondering what the new story might cover, especially since it’s going to be drawn out over three feature-length films.
I’m hoping Johnson might decide to take on the galaxy’s dirty underworld which could also mean the long-awaited return of fan-favourite Boba Fett!
Or alternatively, could we get trilogy surrounding a certain green pointy-eared Jedi Master? I mean, there is still much we don’t know about Yoda. His story needs to be told!
I guess while we wait to see what Johnson comes up with, we do have The Last Jedi to look forward to this December.
