While people all over the world have begun to celebrate Pride month and all its diversity, Netflix has made the official announcement that the the most diverse series on TV, The Wachowskis’ Sense8 has been cancelled after two seasons. Cindy Holland’s, VP or original content at Netflix, confirmed the cancellation this morning in a statement published on the platform’s press blog.
Sense8’s budget was pretty massive, considering it cost an estimated $9 million per episode for its second season. The statement from Netflix doesn’t cite any specific reason for the cancellation stating “[Sense8] is everything we dreamed it would be: bold, emotional, stunning, kick ass, and outright unforgettable. Never has there been a more truly global show with an equally diverse and international cast and crew.”
Well if that’s the case, why bloody cancel it???
From its very first episode, Sense8 was applauded for its thoughtful and complicated portray of its diverse cast of lead characters, many of who fall under the LGBTI bracket. So needless to say with Pride celebrations kicking off this month, the LGBTI community kinda takes it as a slap in the face from Netflix.
Rumours of the show’s cancellation kicked off earlier this week when Brian J. Smith tweeted a message asking fans to support the show and let Netflix know they wanted the series to continue. The hashtag #RenewSense8 began trending worldwide. However, it saddens me to say the campaign did not succeed in having the series renewed.
There is currently a online petition, that is swiftly gaining traction. Currently it has 134,475 supporters since the announcement and continues to grow. So if you love the series as much as I do. Sign it and spread the word through your networks.
After the epic season 2 cliffhanger, Netflix owes The Wachowskis and the fans closure to such a brilliant series!
