In what could be devastating news for the DC cinematic universe, it’s being reported that Gal Gadot, the star of the massively successful Wonder Woman, is thinking about pulling out of the upcoming sequel for a very important reason.
According to website, Page Six, sources have allegedly said that Gadot will not reprise her role as Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman if film producer Brett Ratner continues to be attached to the project.
I’m sure if you haven’t been hiding under a rock over the last two months, you’d be aware of the many sexual misconduct allegations pouring out of Hollywood at the moment, and Ratner is one of those that has been accused.
Last month Gadot backed out of a dinner honouring Ratner, where she was due to present him with an award, and now it seems the actress is taking a strong stance on sexual harassment in Hollywood, and doesn’t want the Wonder Woman franchise to benefit a man accused sexual misconduct.
Ratner’s production company RatPac-Dune Entertainment helped produce Wonder Woman as part of its co-financing deal with Warner Bros. With the original making more than $522 million internationally, Ratner’s company will be predicted to take a healthy share of the profits from the upcoming sequel.
Wonder Woman has put her foot down with Gadot allegedly threatening to not sign on for the sequel unless Warner Bros. buys Ratner out.
“She’s tough and stands by her principles. She also knows the best way to hit people like Brett Ratner is in the wallet,” a source tells Page Six. “She also knows that Warner Bros. has to side with her on this issue as it develops. They can’t have a movie rooted in women’s empowerment being part-financed by a man accused of sexual misconduct against women.”
Considering it took so many years to find the right woman to play the role, a Wonder Woman sequel without Gal Gadot, really shouldn’t happen.
This could very well be the end of the Wonder Woman franchise as we know it. Sad as the possibility is, you have to respect the actress for taking such a powerful and public stand for her morals no matter what. Gal Gadot really is Wonder Woman!
