One thing I’ve really been coming to understand lately is the self-realization of improvement.

Over the Xmas and New Years break I spent nearly two weeks in the Northern QLD area getting back to the basics. When the only light you get is from candles at night, you really come to understand what’s important in life.

Take away all the creature comforts we’ve grown accustomed to, it really puts things in perspective and what you should really put value on in life.

Since being back in Brisbane I’ve really taken a good look at life and what I want out of it. I’ve started back up at the gym and even though my body is aching like no tomorrow, the results in the long run will pay off.

Also I’ve come to know the importance of friends more the ever. These are the people that share your life journey with you and it’s because of this that you should treat them like a prized plant. Remember to constantly nurture and spend time with these people, as a true friendship is a constantly growing relationship.

I’ve dove back into my creative side more so then ever. There’s a point where you have to stop saying “I’m gonna” and start saying “I’m doing!”

Life is what you create, drama is only as big as you let it play out, and you’re only as strong as you’re willing to push yourself.

A twist of change. A bitter but delicious taste on the tip of my tongue. A piercing, a new look. Dreams and hopes become an understanding. Life flowing in a new direction. He gently glances up with that all too familiar look, present but unattainable.

A friend embarks on a journey into an unknown world of new adventures. Blocks falling into place, foundations laid. A screenplay of words begin to breathe life into reality. Stars litter the sky as reminder of the abundance life has to offer one who is will to take a risk and reach out for it.

Life is merely an individual’s ability to create. Drama is only as big as one let’s it play out. The big 30 is inevitably around the corner, prospects, choices, hopes and dreams. Fantasy blends into reality as a twist of change fills my mouth with its bittersweet taste.

Fairy Tales, Hopes, And Dreams…

My lips press against another as Time Square glows with life. The unknown prince. Riding a great white stallion, he rescues me from the slumber spell of life… A modern day fairy tale, a happy ever after ending one could only wish for.

A story of hope, love, accomplishment and achievement. I flick through the pages of a published novel pause for a moment. With a sense of accomplishment I place it on the book shelf to rest knowing a hope and dream has manifested into reality.

I stand breathing the fresh sea air as the sands of Thailand flood between my toes. Stars pierce the night sky above as they glance down like a thousand watching pairs of eyes. A long fiery tear shoots across the blackness of space.

The clock ticks onwards as the hour glass sand flows. Glitter, flash lights, disco balls spinning as the unknown prince holds my hand dancing. At that moment the world does not exist, just two bodies, souls intertwined, swaying hypnotically together on a dance floor.

Speech, the applause and cameras flash, roughly scribbled autographs on napkins.

The rocking chair creaks on the old wooden porch as life long friends watch the world go by. Reflections. Hopes gained, dreams reached, love grasped, a journey shared.

Reality… 3:51 am. Traffic goes by as I sit on my balcony smoking a cigarette.

The wind gently blows, change is on the horizon. Nearing the inevitable thirty landmark. Decisions, choices to be made. Another twist down the path in the pursuit of happiness.

The need to move forward. Memories of the past, the unknown future lies ahead. The road is long with its twists and turns. Street lights flicker with their signals to “stop” and “go.”

The analytic times of hopes and dreams. What ones to put aside and what ones to hold onto firmly?

More then anything what is that I want the most. Life a never-ending flood of consuming questions. Flashing lights, disco balls, the glamour, the long winding road ahead.

Change is on the horizon and I scream for it!

The rain gently falls, I hear the soft splashes as it hits the ground below. Traffic can be heard racing down wet roads in the distance. The world of nature and man-made urbania become one.

The rain gently falls, I hear the soft splashes as it hits the ground below. Traffic can be heard racing down wet roads in the distance. The world of nature and man-made urbania become one.

With a flick of my lighter and a long drag, the tobacco burns and I exhale slowly with long wisps of smoke rising above my head. Peacefulness and relaxation dance together.

Different thoughts plague my mind. I think of friendships, the many changes and challenges each one face. I think of ginger chin, words unspoken, questions unanswered. Friendship or is there more? The future as usual remains unknown, but one thing I know, I still look forward to seeing that smile and glowing eyes.

My thoughts move on to another, a friend, a brother. Amongst music, highs and brain fries, what happened? Is it paranoia or more to the story then what has been said. One can only wait with anticipation as the storm settles and the clouds disappear.

Christmas is nearing, a time of family for some when for others it is time loneliness. Gratitude floods over me at the thought of the family that has been created around me. Rather then based off blood it is based of souls connecting and experiences shared.

Sometimes I stand in a club surrounded by many, while my heart feels inhabited, there are still vacant spaces left. Who they belong to is anyone’s guess. Someone special, another for a connection shared, while one will be reused yet again.

One might paint the walls and refurbish it, but the memories will last for a lifetime. No matter how many times that door slams shut, it always finds itself reopening.

Dreams change while some cement itself, hope stands strong while some hopes simply fade.

My heart beats. My soul continues to grow and change form like the vicious of flames.

I enjoy the way that you burn.

Change is happening and it’s hard not to be excited. Wednesday night I witnessed a historic moment in Queensland LGBT history when the Civil Unions bill was passed in parliament.  The bill was introduced by deputy premier Andrew Fraser, which allows same-sex or heterosexual couples to register their union with the Queensland Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. While it isn’t full marriage equality it is a step in the right direction. Today however another historic moment took place with the ALP changing the party’s platform to support same-sex marriage. What this now means is that a bill will be put forward to parliament in the hope of changing the Marriage Act to support same-sex marriage. Finally our government is getting with times. The fight for equality is far from over, but this is also a positive step in the right direction.

It is so great to see all the work that we’ve doing attending rallies and protesting for equality is starting to pay off. Most of all it feels good to say I’m a part of something greater then myself. It’s moments like this that I think of the first Mardi Gras in Sydney and how important it is to keep the fight for equal rights blazing.

Times are a changing! So I guess I just want to encourage each one of you not to grow idle during this time, continue to send letters to your local government reps, continue to to attend rallies and protests and most of all continue to stand strong. Marriage equality for all!

I live in this mentality in regards to people I NEVER chase, especially in regards to relationships.

Now don’t get me wrong, I believe a little bit of a pursuit is healthy when getting to know a potential, but I think too often people blur the lines between the “pursuit” and that of the “chase.”

I mean when you’re getting to know someone, you have to make a bit of an effort especially if you’re keen on them, but when it’s all your effort this is where it becomes chasing and well I’m just not into that.

Just like friendships, relationships are a two way street. Yes it’s all very well for you to constantly try and make effort and time for someone, but when it feels like it’s not being reciprocated you really must ask yourself “Are you just chasing?”

I say this, simply because two people have to meet at a middle ground if there is to be anything of substance in that relationship.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to getting to know someone. However, if you’re the one constantly trying to organize a time to hang or dropping them a line, and they are not, I’m sorry to say this you have found yourself caught in the “chase.”

I’ll share from my personal experience. Recently I’ve been getting to know someone who I won’t deny I think is pretty amazing. So of course I decided to pursue. The problem is recently it feels like the line between the “pursuit” and the “chase” have become slightly blurred.

While I can understand at this time of the year it can be a very busy time, I personally feel I’m the one putting all the effort in by trying to catch up, sending a text here and there etc.

Let’s be honest, we’re all human, we like to feel wanted to some extent. I’m not saying we need someone’s undivided attention, but hey a little message such as “hey how you doing?” can go a long way. It just shows that you’re at least thinking of the person. I think this is important in relationships of any kind including friendships.

So what do you do when you think the line between the “pursuit” and the “chase” has been blurred? The list is endless but the one thing you at least want to find out is, whether they’re just not that into you.

So for me, I’ve made this conscious decision in my current predicament to pull up on the reins and throw the ball in other person’s side of the court.

At the end of the day I feel I’ve done as much as I can, so now it’s up to the other person for a bit. They know where to find me. Now whether they do or not is another thing, but either way I’ll at least have an answer.

Tonight a civil union bill will be voted on in Queensland Parliament. While civil unions is not complete marriage equality and some may say it’s a poor substitute, it is still a step in the right direction in having our relationships legally recognized.

The battle for equality is far from over and that is why it is still important for those that are available to rally at the ALP conference this Saturday.

Today though, I want to encourage any of you Queenslanders that have time to join me this evening at 5:30pm outside the Queensland Parliament as we rally in support for civil unions and be part of Queensland LGBT history in the making.
