The “Circle of Life” came full circle at The Minskoff Theatre this past Sunday. During The Lion King’scurtain call, Elton John surprised theatre attendees with a performance of the “Circle of Life” in celebration of the musical’s 20th anniversary on Broadway.
The show made its debut at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis on July 8, 1997, but officially opened at the New Amsterdam Theatre on Nov. 13, 1997. The musical has since gone on to win six Tony Awards, including Best Musical and eight Drama Desk Awards. The musical moved to The Minskoff Theatre in 2006, and has become Broadway’s third longest-running show, making over $1 billion, it is the highest-grossing stage show in history.
Accompanied by many of the cast members from the Broadway production, Elton John performed the iconic original song that he helped write for the Grammy and Oscar-winning soundtrack for the beloved Disney film that the show is based.
What an amazing experience to have been sitting in that theatre on Sunday. So jealous!
